Paige Spiranac "scared to be alone" after stalker claims she scammed him of £8k

Offbeat news from the world of sport

Golfing babe Paige Spiranac has opened up about a worrying trend that is leaving her harassed by angry men who have been scammed online.

The golf star – who has over 3.5 million followers on Instagram – recently attended a charity golf tournament in the US, playing alongside A-list names including Justin Timberlake and Miles Teller.

However, although confessing that she had enjoyed the experience on the latest episode of her Playing a Round podcast, the golfer revealed that she had been distracted by an angry man, who claimed that she had manipulated him for money in an online scam.

“He comes up and asks me for a picture, it’s fine at first, and then he goes into how I scammed him out of $10,000 (about £8,300) and he started threatening me. It was a really really scary situation.

“As it turns out, this man was scammed by a fake profile that someone created and it had a fake number, he was unhinged.. I’ve been dealing with these security issues for a while and they have been increasingly worse in the last couple of months.”

As Paige’s public persona grows, more scammers have taken the opportunity to use her likeness, pretending to be the golfing star in order to extract money from gullible fans of the influencer.

This has meant, Paige explained, that she has been increasingly confronted by frustrated victims, despite offering repeated warnings about not falling for fake accounts on social media.

“I’ve just been feeling really scared. I don’t really leave my place much, I don’t go out, I am just starting to feel like I am living in this bubble, and it’s something I’ve never truly experienced before,” she continued.

“I don’t know who’s out there, who’s following me, who’s stalking me, and I know a lot of people go, ‘well that comes with the territory of your job’. No, it shouldn’t.”

Paige admitted that the experience had even hampered her performance at the charity golf event, and added: “I enjoy my job so much but there are times when I don’t enjoy it and I do feel like I’m in a constant state of anxiety because of this reason.

“I always have someone with me, I can never be alone, I’m scared to leave my place, I basically live with my parents. I just can’t be alone anymore, which is really really sad that that has been taken away from me.”
