O’Sullivan victor admits he was ‘bored’ in win and opens up on parties

Ronnie O’Sullivan explains why he made a 146 in 2016

Ronnie O’Sullivan crashed out of the World Snooker Championship at the hands of Luca Brecel on Wednesday despite the Belgian admitting that he was “bored” during their opening session. Brecel was 10-6 down heading into the final set of frames, but rattled off seven straight victories in order to prevent the Rocket from a chance at winning a record eighth world title.

A stunning display from Brecel ensured that O’Sullivan was unable to make a break of over 30 in the final seven frames, but admitted that he was “bored” during the pair’s opening session as he enjoys a faster pace of game.

While he went into detail about his unorthodox preparations for the Crucible, explaining that it involved lots of late nights drinking and playing FIFA with his friends.

“Before the tournament I was out partying, staying up late to 6 or 7am, playing FIFA with my friends,” Brecel told the BBC. “Not practising, and even after I beat Mark Williams [in the second round] I got home at 7am by car, and then we went out again until 5 or 6 in the morning, drunk as hell. The next day, I had to drive back up again so it’s a totally different preparation, and it’s working.”

Brecel has been renowned for his aggressive style of play, as O’Sullivan was expected to get the better of his opponent due to his superior safety game. The first session went as predicted, as Brecel went as far as admitting that he was “bored in my chair” watching the 47-year-old slow the pace down.

Experts have called for the Belgian to expand and develop his game, but he insisted that he does not want to use a Plan B. “I love winning but I don’t mind losing and that’s a dangerous combination to have,” he added. “I always play the same game, people say I don’t have a B game but I do, I just don’t use it. Ronnie told me ‘you’re a great player, I hope you win it’.”

While O’Sullivan was extremely gracious in defeat, admitting that he hopes that Brecel goes on to win the tournament – despite falling at the final eight and ensuring that he will have to wait until next year at least in order to hold the most world titles outright.

“He played unbelievable, I love watching him play,” O’Sullivan said. “Such a dynamic player, full of talent, probably the most talented player I’ve ever seen and hopefully he goes on and wins it, it would be good for snooker.

“If I’d have put up any resistance, if I’d put some balls away, but I just wasn’t playing well enough to have an impact on the game.”

Brecel will play either Scotland’s Anthony McGill or the 20-year-old Chinese debutant Si Juahui in the semi-finals.
