The 2020 Olympics start today, July 23, 2021, after a year-long delay. Host city Tokyo has spent nearly a decade preparing for the honour following a successful bid in 2013. Officials have decided to run events with as little contact as possible without spectators, and they may not return to “normal” until 2024.

Where are the next Olympic Games?

Countries have to make bids to host the summer and winter Olympics, facing off against one another.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) elect the host with a majority vote cast via a secret ballot.

Their 131st IOC session elected Paris in 2017 with a unanimous vote.

French officials have since promised the games will provide a historic spectacle.

They said the Olympics “represent a new adventure that will embark France on an experience unlike anything it has seen before.”

Paris will include four new sports at the games, some of which debut this year.

They include breaking, sport climbing, surfing and skateboarding.

The bid means the city will break a record previously set by London alone.

When they go ahead, Paris becomes the second city to host the Olympics three times.

The French capital previously hosted the games in 1900 and 1924.

And London notably hosted during 1908, 1948 and nearly a decade ago in 2012.

Brisbane’s designation as host came on July 23, following the 134th IOC Session.

The Australian city won the bid unopposed by 72 votes to five, the first to do so amid new bidding procedures.

The 2032 Olympics will mark Australia’s third successful bid for the games.

The country previously hosted the Games in Melbourne in 1956 and Sydney in 2000.
