Olympic star Jack Woolley hospitalised and covered in blood by sickening attack

Tokyo 2020 Olympic taekwondo star Jack Woolley has been left covered in blood and hospitalisation after a freak attack on a night out.

Woolley, 22, had recently returned from Tokyo, where he had been Ireland's first-ever taekwondo Olympian to compete at the games in the men's 58kg category.

The 22-year-old was left 'heartbroken' after failing in his attempts to capture a medal at the dojo in Tokyo.

However, he has said he was attacked in Dublin last night in an Instagram post showing his graphic wounds.

Woolley suffered serious wounds to his lip that has left him requiring plastic surgery.

"Last night I went for a meal with my friend. Followed by a bar for a couple of drinks," he wrote on his Instagram page.

"A gang of roughy 8-12 men and women in their 20s began violently attacking people along the boardwalk.

"I was just walking by before I was punched in the face by one of these group members. Only one punch and followed by 'my mistake wrong person'."

He concluded: "Thank you all again for the support and kind messages. I hope for a speedy recovery. It’s been a tough couple of months."

Woolley's Olympics ended in heartbreak after he was convincingly beaten during his bout with Argentina’s Lucas Guzman.

"My legs went to jelly, something just didn’t click. I’m devastated, it’s tough to take and it will be.

"Some people have come here to participate at an Olympics, I came here to win.

"We had this game-plan and I went out and my legs went to jelly, it just didn’t go to plan — I’m usually a lot more aggressive, I don’t know, it’s just, something just didn’t click," he said of the bout.
