McIlroy loses patience with fan and launches ‘remote controlled ball’ into water

Golf star Rory McIlroy lost his patience with one disruptive fan on Sunday, after launching a remote control ball in the water at the BMW Championship. McIlroy was competing at the penultimate PGA Tour event of the year in Delaware and was disrupted on the 15th green of his final round.

McIlroy was playing alongside Scott Stallings in Sunday’s fourth round at Wilmington Country Club, when the rogue ball made its way onto the putting surface. Whilst the Northern Irishman was lining up his putt the remote control ball could be seen making its way towards the hole.

In no mood to play up the disruption, McIlroy marched over to the moving ball and hit it away with its putter as it looked set to drop.

Attempting once more the controlled ball made another dash for the 15th hole, before the four-time major champion again wafted it away. Losing his patience, McIlroy then marched over, picked up the fan’s ball and launched it into the water hazard alongside the green.

Speaking to Golfweek post-round, his playing partner Stallings said: “That wasn’t exactly something I expected to see on a Saturday afternoon. He kept yelling at Rory, ‘This is my dream, this is my dream’.

“I don’t know exactly what he was dreaming about, but his ball is gone.” Asked on how he thought McIlroy dealt with the disruption, Stallings added: “I thought it was great. I was about to go and do the same thing.”

The spectator in question was subsequently escorted out of the event, and led away by a police officer. Following the bizarre break in play, McIlroy went on to par the par three 15th, before finishing his week in a flurry after carding three birdies across his last three holes to finish with a two-under-par 69 on Sunday.

His impressive final three holes saw the Northern Irishman jump up the leaderboard, as he finished the tournament on nine-under-par in a tie for eighth. McIlroy finished five shots behind eventual champion Patrick Cantlay, who defended his BMW Championship title to leave him on top of the FedEx Cup rankings ahead of this week’s season finale at the Tour Championship.

In the staggered start final at East Lake, Cantlay will lead the field ahead of world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler as the PGA Tour’s top 30 players battle it out for the £15 million prize. McIlroy meanwhile will start the event six shots behind the leader, as he eyes a record third FedEx Cup title.
