A Just Stop Oil anarchist came within feet of disrupting this year's Open at Royal Liverpool before golf 'hero' Billy Horschel stepped in.

American contender Horschel was distracted from his attempts to claim the Claret Jug when the fanatics struck during Friday's second round at Birkenhead. And the Floridian was cheered by the crowd after intercepting the eco-warrior and leading them off the course as security took over.

Course marshals were quick to move in after Just Stop Oil's moronic members invaded the competition, letting off a number of orange smoke bombs in an attempt to disrupt the action. But their efforts were swiftly stubbed out, much to the enjoyment of many spectators.

The Open is the latest major sporting event to be targeted by Just Stop Oil after causing disruptions at Wimbledon, the Ashes and the World Snooker Championship in recent weeks.

England cricketer Jonny Bairstow was similarly applauded for his role in removing an invader during the Ashes series. And England rugby star Tom Curry helped haul another orange agitator from the field during Sale Sharks' defeat to Saracens in the Premiership final.

Horschel – who has won seven times on the PGA Tour – was also applauded online after helping one of the three disruptors from Royal Liverpool. One social media user even joked the act 'needs to be taken into Ryder Cup consideration'.
