‘I’m a World Darts Championship winner but I live off £212 pocket money’

World Darts Championship star Peter Wright has revealed that he lives off £212 per-week pocket money given to him by his wife. Wright says the winnings from his career go straight to his partner Jo, who budgets him a relatively tiny amount each week.

The 53-year-old is a two-time world champion, winning darts’ biggest event in 2020 and 2022. But unlike many of his colleagues in the sport, he says he is unable to enjoy “lavish” purchases.

Jo – who is also Wright’s manager – collects her husband’s winnings and makes him a modest budget of £212 per week. He jokingly describes her as the “richest manager in darts”.

“Me? Lavish purchases? No, I don’t get to,” he told The Sun newspaper.

“I was at a preview night when asked the question. Michael van Gerwen’s bought a Rolls Royce or something like that and Michael Smith had bought something else and Gezzy (Gerwyn Price) had bought this and that.

“I get my £212 per week and just like playing my darts and trying to win trophies. While Jo is the richest manager in darts!”

Wright – known for his eccentric outfits and highlighter-coloured mohawks – does not feature at Alexandra Palace until Wednesday. Nicknamed ‘Snakebite’, the reigning European champion believes he can become the world champion.

His form dipped at the start of the year but having won the European Championship in October, Wright believes his fortune is starting to turn.

“I believe I can win it, I am not playing until December 20 so it gives me three weeks tinkering with my darts to make them 95 or 98 per cent perfect, that’ll do,” he said earlier in December.

“There is potential to become a third-time world champion. That is in my sights and I am looking forward to it.

“It puts a lot of pressure off my shoulders to know I have won it twice. I think I have got a lot of advantage over a lot of the field.

“I am nowhere near my best at the moment, but I know what it takes to win. I decided to go and put the practice in and I went and won the European. I have put my focus on the Worlds, to be prepared for winning it one more time.”
