Adam Johnson’s girlfriend ran onto ice to pray after tragic hockey accident

Adam Johnson's girlfriend ran onto the ice and prayed for the stricken hockey star following his fatal accident, according to reports.

The Nottingham Panthers forward, 29, suffered a freak injury during their clash with the Sheffield Steelers on Saturday (October 28) evening, with an opponent's skate slashing his neck. He tried to make it to the sidelines but collapsed with blood pouring from the gash.

His team-mates formed a protective barrier around him while emergency treatment was administered and fans were ordered to leave. The Sun claim as that was happening, Johnson's partner rushed from the stands to be closer to him and pray for him.

He was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital but his tragic death was confirmed by the Panthers on social media on Sunday morning.

Tributes have since flooded in for American Johnson, who forged his career in his home country and also had spells in Sweden and Germany before moving to Nottingham in August.

His mum Kari heartbreakingly wrote on Facebook: "I lost half of my heart today. Love you always." Meanwhile, fans have flocked to both the Utilita Arena – the scene of the incident – and the Motorpoint Arena – Johnson's home stadium – to pay their respects.

Flowers have been laid outside both in emotional scenes. There was a minute's silence held before today's Championship match between Sheffield Wednesday and Rotherham United.

Announcing his passing, the Panthers statement read: “The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night.
