UFC fighter Rafa Garcia needed two hours of medical attention after his win over  Hayisaer Maheshate on Saturday night, after an elbow to the head left him with a cut artery.

Garcia got caught in the second round with the elbow but it didn’t stop him during the fight, despite it immediately bleeding very heavily.

The 28-year-old won on points but needed lengthy medical treatment in the immediate aftermath due to the profuse bleeding.

It was his cornerman, UFC veteran Cub Swanson, who detailed quite how gory a condition Garcia was in.

His cornerman, Cub Swanson, said that the elbow cut an artery on Garcia’s head in the fight

‘Rafa Garcia had a cut artery on his head. It took the UFC medical staff almost two hours to get it to stop bleeding. He is ok now,’ Swanson wrote on Twitter.

Sharing a video of blood pouring through a gauze pad on Garcia’s head, Swanson added: ‘The UFC medical team did a great job getting this thing fixed up’.

Once Garcia was treated and cleaned up, he spoke to media in a press conference after his win.

‘I think I got 15 stitches!’ Garcia said. ‘I think it’s the most stitches I’ve ever gotten.

‘Whenever I get a cut, they normally glue it. You never know in the fight, the judges might see the blood, too much blood, and give him a round.

After he had been cleaned up, Garcia spoke about his fears they’d stop the fight due to his cut

‘Or they can stop the fight. You just never know. So that made me keep pushing and try to make a statement.

‘I knew he was a great striker and a great counter-puncher. It was hard, I went in there and hit the body a lot and I feel like that broke him a little bit.

‘It didn’t affect me (the blood), I was just concerned they were going to stop the fight. Sometimes, the judges will base stuff on damage.’
