  • Nurmagomedov is also retired, leaving the sport as lightweight champ in 2020

UFC legend Georges St-Pierre has revealed he would have come out of retirement at one time for a blockbuster fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The former two-weight world champion retired from the UFC back in 2017 after submitting Michael Bisping to claim the middleweight title, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest fighters in the organisation’s history.

St-Pierre has relentlessly been linked with a return to the octagon ever since he left the sport over three years ago, with superstars like Conor McGregor a name often mentioned.

However, St-Pierre has now revealed that he could’ve been tempted to return if he was offered the chance to face McGregor’s fierce rival Nurmagomedov, who himself is now retired after walking away from the UFC as an undefeated lightweight champion last year.

Speaking about the Russian on Joe Rogan’s podcast, St-Pierre said: ‘For me Khabib is one of the scariest because he’s beating you down, he’s not only beating you but he’s breaking you mentally and for me that is the scariest and he is the scariest guy pound for pound.

‘I would have come back for him.’

St-Pierre said he wouldn’t want to fight Khabib now and named him the ‘scariest’ man in UFC

The 39-year-old has been training again in the gym in recent months with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach, but admitted he would now avoid any potential future fight with Nurmagomedov as he quelled any hopes of him making another return.

‘It’s over now,’ he added. ‘If Khabib wants me to fight, he needs to hide himself while I’m in the gym training.

‘I was in the gym hitting the pads with Freddie Roach and I hadn’t done it for so long because of Covid and everything in Montreal being closed, but I got my mechanic back and Freddie looked at me and was like “Georges, you’ve got the itch back” and I was like: “Ahh, stop saying that!”.

‘If Dana White would walk in right now in the gym in between rounds I would sign the contract in a blink of an eye but then when I go back to Montreal to my home, in my comfort, and I would be like “hell no!”.’

St-Pierre initially retired in 2013 as welterweight champion, having held the record for most wins in a title bout and the second longest combined title streak in UFC history (2,204 days), before making his comeback four years later to defeat Bisping.

However, the chances of him returning again seem to be off the cards while Nurmagomedov has also vowed to stay retired despite UFC president White believing there’s ‘still a chance’ he could make a comeback.

Nurmagomedov’s arch-rival McGregor, meanwhile, is bidding to stake his claim as a legitimate contender to the lightweight crown when he faces Dustin Poirier in July in a rematch after losing to him earlier this year.
