Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier are set to complete their epic trilogy in the early hours of Sunday morning at UFC 264 with a shot at Charles Oliveira’s lightweight world title up for grabs: Everything to know ahead of the fight

  • Dustin Poirier and Conor McGregor go to war again this weekend at UFC 264
  • The pair square off for a third time, with one win apiece after two fights
  • Poirier emphatically stopped McGregor in their January rematch at UFC 257
  • A shot at Charles Oliveira’s newly-gained lightweight title awaits the winner

Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier are set to go to war once more in a mouth-watering trilogy bout at UFC 264 in the early hours of Sunday morning.

‘The Notorious’ was too slick for his opponent when the pair first met in 2014, claiming a stunning first-round knockout victory at UFC 178.

However, the tables were turned in their January rematch at UFC 257 in Abu Dhabi, with Poirier displaying a kickboxing masterclass to claim a second-round TKO victory and dash McGregor’s already unlikely hopes of a rematch with the retired Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Now, the pair go head-to-head for a third and likely final time, with the winner then in line for a title shot against current lightweight champion Charles Oliveira, who won the strap with a second-round TKO of three-time Bellator champion Michael Chandler in May.

With the match-up now swiftly approaching, Sportsmail takes you through everything you need to know.

The pair are expected to walk to the ring at around 6am BST, though that of course will depend on results beforehand.

The main card will begin at 3am BST, with four fights to be completed before McGregor and Poirier take the octagon.

The preliminaries will run beforehand from 1am to 3am.

What’s been said?

There has been plenty of talk in the build-up to the epic showdown. Poirier has stated he wants an all-out war and has insisted he will get the win should that be the case.

‘If I was him, I would try to touch me early and keep me out of rhythm,’he told ESPN.

‘Because if this thing starts to blossom into a fight, second, third, fourth, we start hurting in there, we start grinding it out, getting into a rhythm, I win that ten out of ten times.

‘I want a blood and guts war, I want to question my will to fight, I want to be uncomfortable from the first second of the first round, I want to find out all this stuff.’

Poirier admits he will face a different McGregor this time, however, with everything to lose for the Irishman.

‘It’s all on the line for him now,’ the Louisianan added. ‘He’s not doing this for money, he’s doing this for pride, for respect, to prove that he’s still an important piece of this 155 lb division.

‘That’s a dangerous man; somebody who’s doing it for themselves to prove something, he’s not doing it for anything else but that, he doesn’t need to.

‘He’s motivated, he’s not coming out here to dampen his name any more, to get knocked out again or submitted again, he wants to build McGregor Enterprises back to what it was.’

McGregor was humble in defeat but has promised to ‘finish the job’ at UFC 264 this weekend

This weekend’s winner will be in line to face current lightweight champion Charles Oliveira

McGregor was courteous in defeat, stating in the immediate aftermath: ‘I have no excuses. It was a phenomenal performance by Dustin. I have to dust it off and come back. I need activity, you don’t get away with being inactive in this business.’

However, the trash talk has picked up as the fight has approached. In June, McGregor stated: ’25 days I finish the job’.

He has also since responded to Poirier’s claims that he’s the best boxer in the UFC.

‘Best boxer, my a**!’ McGregor said. ‘Shooting a**, shelling a** b****.

‘Quick take for you and your team pal – You got pucked around in the clinch! Elbows, knees, shoulders, fists. Looking outside the cage for advice.

‘Three fights against me for any man is an early grave. God bless.’
