McGregor recalls awkward first encounter with UFC chief White in 2007

‘I don’t think he liked that too much!’: Conor McGregor recalls awkward first encounter with UFC chief Dana White in 2007… with the superstar’s question about money to his future boss causing him to WALK AWAY!

  • Conor McGregor travelled to Manchester to watch UFC 270 as a 16-year-old boy
  • The future UFC superstar had first met his future boss, Dana White, at the event
  • McGregor opted to ask ‘how much money’ White had in his pocket at that time
  • The awkward nature of the encounter promptly ended when White walked away

Conor McGregor has recalled his hilarious first encounter with Dana White aged just 16 – although he clearly failed to make an impression after the UFC chief ‘walked off’.

The outspoken Irishman enjoyed a brief run-in with White at UFC 70 in 2007, just a year before making his whirlwind MMA debut.

The meeting between the duo did not quite go to plan for McGregor, however, who outlined in an interview how his bizarre question fell on deaf ears.

In his first sit-down with ESPN in 2014, McGregor said: ‘When I was 16 years old, I was at my first UFC event as a fan.

‘After the event, Dana stays and takes pictures with the fans. I ran down to the railings and I seen Dana and I was like, “Dana, Dana.”

‘He looked at me… “How much money have you got in your pocket right now this second?”

‘He looked at me with like a weird face and then just kind of walked off.

‘So, I don’t think he liked that too much, but it was fun. I was just a little kid dreaming of the big time.’

Despite their rocky introduction, both men have since gone on to make UFC history together.

McGregor, 32, will make his return to the Octagon on January 23 – his first appearance in over a year.

‘The Notorious’ will make his return to the Octagon this month in his fight with Dustin Poirier

‘The Notorious’ will take on Dustin Poirier in their hotly-anticipated headline bout, and rematch, on Fight Island at UFC 257.

But the future of the former two-weight champion had been unclear late last year.

McGregor was called out by White after leaking messages from a conversation between them – in which they had discussed potential opponents and events.

‘Everybody here knows, even the ladies, this is some man code stuff,’ White said.

‘It’s just something you don’t do. It’s one of the dirtiest things you can do, because we were just talking about Diego Sanchez.

‘And Diego Sanchez is in there in a private conversation I was having with Conor.’
