Khabib Nurmagomedov has reflected that his infamous UFC 229 brawl was ignited by frustration at how easy he found the fight with Conor McGregor.
The Russian entered the fight with his nemesis after a toxic build-up and it remains the biggest pay-per-view card in the company’s history.
He was in control for much of the fight before finding the finish in the fourth round but the night is remembered for what followed.
Khabib Nurmagomedov says he is unhappy that Conor McGregor tapped so easily at UFC 229
The Dagestani was still angry after he won and then decided to jump the cage
He was led back to the changing rooms by security, who acted swiftly in the face of chaos
A mass brawl broke out when Khabib jumped over the cage to confront Dillon Danis, McGregor’s team-mate while a number of the Dagestani’s own entourage leapt into the cage to attack McGregor.
Dana White refused to put the belt on Khabib out of fear that the crowd might also turn nasty and the retired lightweight has now reflected on why he was so wound up.
He told the Full Send podcast: ‘First of all, I was preparing for war. I come inside the cage, I fight with this guy, and he tapped, I’m like, why I come here, why I train so hard for this? You’re going to tap easily like this? I just take his chin, you know, and he tapped.
‘This one makes me upset too, because I accept more than what I find inside the cage, I expect more.
‘Honestly, I don’t remember everything, I’m going to be honest. I remember someone from his corner saying something and it was crazy emotional moment for me. I’m like okay this party not finished.’
‘I’m not going to say I am proud of something like this, maybe at the age, right now of 33-and-a-half, maybe I’m not going to jump right now. But, at that time (I did).’
McGregor got under the skin of Khabib more than any other opponent, throwing a metal dolly at him through a bus window in New York and repeatedly using highly incendiary language and personal insults.
Khabib was evidently still emotional even after the victory but the pair were never to rematch, with the wrestling star hanging up his gloves in 2020 after beating Justin Gaethje to move to 29-0.
