Conor McGregor has told Dustin Poirier he will be ‘ready’ for the American’s tactics ahead of their highly-anticipated trilogy bout as the Irishman accepted his rival’s challenge to meet ‘in the middle of the octagon’.

McGregor’s hopes of enticing Khabib Nurmagomedov out of retirement were dealt a heavy blow in January, with the former two-weight world champion’s return to the UFC going awry as Poirier clinched an impressive TKO victory.

Poirier, 32, appeared set for a shot at the vacant lightweight title following the UFC 257 win, but has opted to pursue a third fight with McGregor on July 10, with the pair tied at a win apiece.

The Irishman’s UFC return was scuppered by the American on Fight Island in January

The Notorious took to Twitter this week to tell fans that he will revert to his old training methods that saw him become the first ‘Champ Champ’ in UFC history.

‘Double skills work. I also didn’t take rest days unless I absolutely had to. Not one. Not even a Sunday.

‘I will take this approach again for my comeback fight. I didn’t become ufc champ champ with this method but I did become ufc 145 champion. Also the cage warrior champ champ.’

McGregor took to Twitter to say he would be prepared for Poirier’s tactics this time around

Poirier responded to his lightweight rival’s post, challenging the Irishman to ‘meet him in the middle’ of the octagon this summer.

‘I never slack, I’ll meet you in the middle of the octagon July 10th,’ he wrote.

McGregor welcomed Poirier’s stance, reminding the American that he attempted a takedown in the opening knockings of the first round in January.

‘Good to hear Dustin, I hope so. As last time you backed up and shot inside the first 30 seconds,’ McGregor responded.

‘I’ll be in the middle from the very go if you want it. You know that. I’ll be ready for the tactics this time too tho. See you in there.’

The pair’s trilogy bout could prove decisive for McGregor’s bid to regain the lightweight title

The Notorious was undone by countless unchecked calf kicks, and he has vowed to make the tactical adjustments necessary to ensure that he avenges his Fight Island defeat.

The July 10 contest could well be a case of last chance saloon for McGregor, who has one victory and two defeats from his last three UFC bouts.

The 32-year-old has teased a return to boxing this year, with a Manny Pacquiao bout mooted. However, if he can defeat Poirier he will put himself in prime position to challenge either Michael Chandler or Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title.
