Conor McGregor sends slightly creepy voice note to Poirier ahead of trilogy
Conor McGregor has sent a slightly creepy voice note to his rival Dustin Poirier, telling his opponent: "I'm coming for you".
The Irishman used the Twitter voice messaging service to send Poirier a warning, which was viewed more than 150,000 times within the first hour of being posted.
McGregor blasted the Louisiana native as a "silly hillbilly" in the note, and revived the infamous 'pea head' nickname he used to rile up his opponent heading into their first fight in 2014.
The Irishman explained in the lead-up why he called Poirier, saying: "A pea head is like a, you know, a pea that you eat. It's like a small little green pea. He just has an unusually small head I believe."
Back then, Poirier said he has 'never hated any opponent' more than McGregor, who was a 24-year-old brash Irish fighter who had yet to prove himself at the world level.
And the teasing appeared to work, with McGregor easily stopping Poirier within less than two minutes of the first round in their UFC 178 undercard bout.
It appeared that the pair had patched up their differences when they met for a second time in January, with both men engaging in pleasantries at the weigh-in for their rematch.
And there was a mutual respect between the two even when Poirier stopped McGregor in the second round of the rematch, with both agreeing almost instantly to fight once more.
But when an issue arose around a charitable donation McGregor had promised to Poirier's 'The Good Fight Foundation', their rivalry heated up again, and the former two-weight world champion ended up pulling the $500,000 donation.
And now McGregor is saying he will win the trilogy fight with a brutal head-kick, similar to how he won his 2020 comeback fight with Donald 'Cowboy' Cerrone.
Asked by a fan during an Instagram Live stream, McGregor promised to "give him a proper head kick," when they step into the octagon on Saturday.
"There will be a lot of weapons produced on the night, that's for sure. He wants mixed martial arts? He's going to get it.
"I've been busy putting in the work – full focus, fully immersed in mixed martial arts, it's been nothing but mixed martial arts, so I'm ready to put on a show."
The Irishman will arrive in Vegas this week after taking in a California training camp, where he cycled at 20-mile round trip to training every day before training with his world championship team.
He worked with long time coaches John Kavanagh and Owen Roddy, as well as top Bellator lightweight Peter Queally in the lead-up to this massive trilogy.
And when he arrives in Las Vegas, fans can expect the old trash talking McGregor when the pair go face-to-face for the first time since the rematch at a press conference on Thursday.
Poirier is a slight favourite, but bookies almost cannot split the pair with the score level at 1-1.
