Conor McGregor must serve a medical suspension of up to six months after his knockout defeat by Dustin Poirier at UFC 257.

The Irishman was stopped in the second round on Abu Dhabi’s ‘Fight Island’ and has now been forced to sit out for a maximum of 180 days due to the injury he suffered.

McGregor said his leg swelled up to the size of an ‘American football’ following a ferocious barrage of blows from Poirier that inflicted his first-ever knockout loss.

McGregor has been hit with a maximum 180-day suspension for the injury to his calf

He has also been served with a mandatory 45-day suspension from fighting for his defeat.

The 180-day injury suspension can be cut short by a doctor, however, with a negative X-ray of his tibia and fibula.

That could pave the way for a potential rematch with Poirier in May, with McGregor already talking up the prospects of a ‘blockbuster trilogy’ fight with the American.

McGregor shared an Instagram picture of his battered right leg elevated as he reclined on a sofa.

The Notorious was spotted gingerly hobbling to his post-fight press conference on crutches

And he captioned it with the message: ‘Thanks for the support everyone! Was not my night/morning in there but a great contest to improve on.

‘I’m excited at the blockbuster trilogy I now have on my hands. Dustin is a hell of a competitor and I look forward to going again.

‘Elevating the leg and the spirit on my way home.’

Just hours before, McGregor had been forced to hobble to the post-fight press conference on crutches.

He said: ‘It’s heartbreaking, it’s hard to take, highest highs and the lowest lows. My leg is completely dead – even though I felt like I was checking them I was badly compromised. It is like an American football in my suit at the minute.’

McGregor started the fight strongly but once Poirier targeted his vulnerable calf, it proved too much.

McGregor said: ‘The leg kicks were good. The low calf kick was a very good. The leg was there and then I just wasn’t as comfortable as I need to be.’
