Conor McGregor and fellow UFC stars eligible for ‘secret’ fight bonuses

UFC president Dana White has revealed he hands out 'secret' bonuses to fighters who impress him.

The promotion gives out 'Fight of the Night' and 'Performance of the Night' prizes worth $50,000 after each event.

But White also gives out bonuses worth between £10,000 and $25,000 to other fighters who miss out on the main prize.

He told the New York Post that the UFC handed out $18m in bonuses last year, including $9.6m in discretionary sums.

White said: "Everybody who delivered on the card, I write cheque depending on what I thought of their fight.

"I'll give you an example. There will be a night where some crazy s*** happens throughout the whole card, and then we have to pick what we thought [were] the $50,000 [bonus recipients], but somebody else was right in the running.

"They could have got it too… and it depends, I’ll write them anywhere from $10,000 to $25,000."

There is nothing to stop the UFC's biggest stars from being awarded these bonuses, although they more than often hoover up the main prizes.

Donald Cerrone has picked up a record 18 'Of the Night' bonuses during his storied career while lightweight title hopeful Charles Oliveira has 16.

Nate Diaz and Joe Lauzon have each earned 15 while legend Anderson Silva rounds out the top five with 14.

Most recently, Beneil Dariush and Carlos Diego Ferreira earned Fight of the Night bonuses while Alexander Volkov and Cory Sandhagen were awarded $50,000 each for knocking out Alistair Overeem and Frankie Edgar respectively.

And Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, Makhmud Muradov and Marina Rodriguez all earned the same sum at UFC 257 for their respective triumphs with Poirier knocking out Conor McGregor in the second round of their rematch.

McGregor himself has won 10 'Of the Night' bonuses including on his debut when he famously shouted "60Gs baby!" at White following his KO of Marcus Brimage.
