Rockies’ Trevor Story hits walk-off homer to beat D-Backs, complete sweep – The Denver Post

Trevor Story knew it when he hit it.

His leadoff, 438-foot, solo walk-off homer off Stefan Crichton lifted the Rockies to a 4-3 win over Arizona Sunday afternoon at Coors Field. It was the fourth walk-off home run of Story’s career and gave Colorado a three-game sweep of the Diamondbacks — Colorado’s first three-game sweep of the season.

The Diamondbacks’ defeat extended their losing streak to eight games, their road losing streak to 12 games and dropped them into the National League West basement, behind the Rockies.

Colorado had tied the game, 3-3 in the eighth, but should have taken the lead. Ryan McMahon led off with a single, took second on a careless error by left fielder David Peralta, advanced to third on Josh Fuentes’ flyball to right and scored on Yonathan Daza’s grounder to second.

After a walk by catcher Dom Nunez, pinch-hitter Garrett Hampson hit a flyball double to the right-field corner, but Daza, waiting at second base to see if Josh Reddick caught the ball, was thrown out at home on a series of strong throws from Reddick to second baseman Josh Rojas to catcher Daulton Varsho.

Colorado starter Jon Gray was perfect through four innings and was still cruising through five, despite giving up a leadoff single to Peralta.

Things fell apart for Gray in the sixth, beginning with back-to-back walks to Daulton Varshow and Andrew Young. On Young’s walk, Nuñez threw wildly to second base trying to catch Varshow stealing, even though it was ball four. The error allowed Varshow to take third and he scored on Ketel Marte’s sacrifice fly to center. The killer blow was Pavin’s Smith two-run, 435-foot homer to left off Gray’s 93.3 mph first-pitch fastball.

Colorado’s first run came off the bat of the previously slumping Story, who ripped a two-out single to right to score Nuñez.

The Rockies laid a goose egg in the first inning and it almost cost them. Arizona lefty Taylor Widener, back from the injured list, was erratic, walking Raimel Tapia and hitting Charlie Blackmon and C.J. Cron to load the bases with one out. But Widener struck out McMahon and Fuentes flew out to right to end the inning.

The Rockies begin a seven-day, seven-game road trip in New York on Monday where they will open a four-game series vs. the Mets. The Rockies are 2-17 on the road.
