Fernando Tatis Jr. agrees to 14-year, $340 million contract extension with San Diego Padres

Fernando Tatis Jr. has agreed to one of the biggest deals in baseball history, a new 14-year contract with the San Diego Padres worth $340 million, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.

The person spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because the deal was not yet official.

The new contract goes into effect this season, meaning Tatis is under team control through 2035. He would have been a free agent after the 2024 season.

Tatis, one of baseball's brightest young stars, has played two seasons in the major leagues, hitting .301 with 39 home runs and 98 RBIs in 143 games played. He hit 17 home runs in the coronavirus-shortened 2020 season and helped the Padres reach the postseason.

It's the third-largest contract in baseball history based on total value, behind Mike Trout ($430 million with Angels) and Mookie Betts ($365 million with Dodgers).

Tatis, nicknamed "El Niño", is the son of former major leaguer Fernando Tatis Sr., who played from 1997-2010 in the big leagues.
