Trainer Brett Bellamy says wide barrier a positive for Jakuta at Taree

When Jakuta drew barrier nine of 10 in the fourth race at Taree on Monday his trainer actually got a little extra confidence about his winning chances.

Brett Bellamy thinks his seven-year-old will be able to get into a better rhythm and have more of a chance of winning than he did last start when coming out of barrier four.

“He’s been racing well and I’d prefer to be drawn where he is,” Bellamy said.

“The other day he drew a good gate and couldn’t find daylight. I think he’s still looking for a way out.

“From the wider gate he can get out and roll forward like he did two runs back and he’ll be hard to run down after being stiff the other day.”

Jakuta is having his 50th start today in the 1412m event and he’s been in a purple patch of late with a win and placing at his past four runs.

Bellamy said there was no real reason for it except his horse has taken advantage of luck when it’s presented of late.

“He’s had some excuses in the past. He’s struck bottomless tracks with weight on his back and he had to work on the wrong part of the track,” he said.

“His only disappointing run was at Taree when getting back and not doing much but since then he’s been consistent and he looks great.”

And Bellamy has no doubts Jakuta will handle the quicker than usual back up with no problems as regular rider Matthew Bennett hops back aboard.

“He’s still nice and fresh and hasn’t done much work so he’s good. It’s a week and three quarters so he’ll be fine,” Bellamy said.

“He runs on fresh air and he’s feeling good.”

Supreme Diva and All About Charlie take each other on in the sixth race, a Benchmark 58 Handicap (1007m) and they’re racing fresh.

Bellamy said despite being out for a long time, Supreme Diva has pleased him at home and she’s already won first-up.

“They’re both coming back and Supreme Diva has been out only a couple of days short of 12 months,” Bellamy said.

“She’s done everything right and is going along nicely. She’s done everything we’ve asked of her.”

All About Charlie has drawn wide in 10 but she likes to get back and run on and she produced some eye-catchers last time in.

“I’d like a dozen of her,” Bellamy said.

“She gives you everything she’s got every time she goes around.

“She’s yet to fire at Taree due to her pattern. The front runners generally win the races there but she does run really good races first-up. She will need luck.”

Venusian is Bellamy’s last runner on the day in a Class 3 Handicap (1257m) and he’s third-up after showing below average form this time in.

Bellamy thinks he might be getting back to the form than saw him runs some good races last preparation.

“His first couple of runs back were ordinary but he was getting back to his best the other day so I’m hoping there’s a bit of natural improvement from that run to this one,” Bellamy said.
