JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

STAN SHEPPARD is full of confidence with eight winners from his last 20 rides which makes his mounts — THUNDERCLAP (Bangor, 1.11), WEXFORD PARK (Bangor, 1.44) and SAMMY’S GUARANTEE (Bangor, 2.21) — worth a second look.

TRAINER TO FOLLOW

JONJO O’NEILL has had eight winners from his last 36 runners, a positive ahead of a big afternoon spearheaded by MONBEG GENIUS (Newbury, 2.50) in the Coral Gold Cup, a race O’Neill won in 2020 with Cloth Cap.

His last run can be ignored because he made a bad mistake before being pulled up. O’Neill also has chances with INCH HOUSE (Newbury, 12.30), SOARING GLORY (Doncaster, 1.31), ANYHARMINASKING (Newbury, 1.40) plus CLONDAW ROYALE (Bangor, 1.44) and OUR FRIEND MO (Bangor, 2.56)

BIG DAY FOR

Jockey Paul O’Brien, whose career has taken off since joining Harry Derham’s stable. He rides the improving BRENTFORD HOPE (Newbury, 2.15) for his boss and has also picked up a Coral Gold Cup ride on Warren Greatrex-trained BILL BAXTER (Newbury, 2.50), who won the Topham Trophy Chase at Aintree’s Grand National meeting in April.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

EMAILANDY (Newbury, 1.05)

An affectionate nod to the late owner Andy Stewart, the man who owned the great stayer Big Buck’s, who was well known among his friends and the media for firing off emails with ideas and suggestions. The gelding is part-owned by Andy’s family.

WATCH OUT FOR

JET POWERED (Newbury, 1.40)

Described by his trainer as a horse with huge potential, he cost a whopping 350,000gns. He won well at the track last season before flopping on his follow-up. Issues have reportedly been addressed and he starts out over half a mile further than his previous hurdle races.

HORSES FOR COURSES

The recent form of ZANZA (Newbury, 2.50) isn’t encouraging but the gelding trained by Philip Hobbs and Johnson White has run nine times at the track, winning on five occasions.

TRAINER TARGET

Nicky Henderson has won the Gerry Feilden Handicap Hurdle four times in the last 10 years, including three of the last four. He runs James Bowen-ridden UNDER CONTROL (Newbury, 2.15) who in April at Sandown beat stablemate Iberico Lord, winner of the Greatwood Hurdle at Cheltenham last month.
