SANTA BARBARA (Epsom, 4.30) may have fluffed her first Classic audition in the Qipco 1,000 Guineas, but she can deliver an award-winning performance in today’s Cazoo Oaks.

Given the hype surrounding the daughter of Camelot pre-Newmarket, defeat at HQ initially felt like a huge letdown as she failed to match the turn of foot displayed by stablemate Mother Earth.

However, closer inspection of the run revealed it was a highly creditable showing on just her second racecourse appearance, especially as rider Ryan Moore was at pains to educate the filly late on, nursing her out of the Dip once he realised his winning chance had gone.

That consideration may pay dividends this afternoon aboard a filly that was said to be lighting up the Ballydoyle gallops this spring.

Those stories often prove to have precious little relevance to racecourse performances, but Santa Barbara has impressed in both starts to date and is taken to deliver on the promise today.

Snowfall will be fancied by many following her smooth Musidora Stakes win at York, but she was afforded the run of the race then and may not be so indulged here.

Zeyaadah would arguably have beaten Dubai Fountain in the Cheshire Oaks but for finding trouble on the Roodee and would be a confident bet to reverse placings had she not been allotted stall one, a berth which has proved virtually insurmountable over 12 furlongs at Epsom.

Like Santa Barbara, the Roger Varian-trained filly appears to have plenty of tactical speed and rates the chief danger providing she isn’t locked away on the rail when the runners turn for home.

Al Aasy has been all the rage for the Coral Coronation Cup since the declarations were made and it isn’t difficult to see why given the manner of his success in a Newbury Group 3 last month.

That victory was achieved in little more than a common canter and many will want to back him to complete a rapid hat-trick.

However, market rival Logician didn’t really fire that day and the form looks light-years away from the level JAPAN (Epsom, 3.10) has reached when at his peak.

Admittedly that high did come 12 months ago, but the five-year-old ran a blinder in the 2019 Derby so the track will hold few terrors.
