Racing fans can’t get enough of horse with ‘best name ever’

Racing fanatics in Australia have been left lauding one of the best named horses in the business on Friday night.

Memumsmedad, the son of English stallion Redwood, debuted at Pakenham Racecourse outside of Melbourne, with punters purring over what he'd been called. He was being ridden by Ben Allen, younger brother of trainer John, as he finished fifth in the 1200m Maiden Plate.

And the latter admitted the naming process was the culmination of weeks of brainstorming, and it was son Matthew, also a jockey, who finally came up with the golden ticket. “We were all trying to work names and came up with some shocking names," he told the Herald Sun.

"Trying to put the words together. Matt came in, the first name he dropped out was ‘Memumsmedad’, and we were like ‘no s—’, that’s a good name!”

And fans on social media were left impressed, with @bryce_parker26 tweeting: "Knocked it out of the park with this one Memumsmedad." @Lion_Tamer_Nz added: "Has to be one of the most well named horses i think I've come across."

The News Racing account also made a bold declaration, typing: "There are some very clever racehorse names around but Memumsmedad, who is set to make his debut at Pakenham on Friday night, might just be the best one."

Memumsmedad, an unnamed three-year-old at the time, was a member of a Yulong Stud international shipment in 2020 but Covid hit and cancelled the exportation. In an online auction, Allen then paid £24,700 for the gelding.

“I liked the look of him, I knew he was by Redwood but I never looked at the mare’s side,” Allen said. “A good type so I bought him and then when we got the paperwork back from the studbook I thought, ‘Oh, they have made a blue here, by Redwood’.”

The story is one of the more positive stories to have emerged in Australian these past few weeks, after female punters became embroiled in a boozy brawl in Brisbane. The iconic Melbourne Cup race was also marred by activists spraying sludge over the track.
