NEWCASTLE

BEST BET

Race 1 No. 3: COMME BELLA FILLE

Left New Zealand as a winner at Matamata. Now with John O’Shea, the daughter of Complacent ran a ripper at her Australian debut over 1350m and steps up to a mile here.

NEXT BEST

Race 6 No. 9: WICKLOW

Irish-bred import making his Australian debut for Chris Waller in the Amelia’s Dream colours. Trialled like a horse who was ready to win.

VALUE BET

Race 3 No. 15: GERARDJOSEPH

Enough to like about the debut run at Goulburn behind a decent horse. Fitter, smarter and up in trip suits.

QUADDIE

Race 4: 3,7,8

Race 5: 1,8

Race 6: 9

Race 7: 1,2,3,4

JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

Tommy Berry rode four winners at Rosehill on Saturday, how many can he boot home here?

PORT MACQUARIE

BEST BET

Race 3 No. 4: PAXOS MISS

Another one in the Amelia’s Dream colours racing with bright prospects. First run for Adam Duggan, trialled up a treat for the occasion.

NEXT BEST

Race 5 No. 5: IMPULSE CONTROL

Looked very good indeed when she won here back in early January. Runner-up in a deep heat at Newcastle 13 days ago.

VALUE BET

Race 1 No. 1: DOUBLE AWARD

Perfectly placed to post his first win; up to 1500m third-up this time in, good draw and rider.

THE INSIDE MAIL FOR NEWCASTLE

RACE 1

Comme Bella Fille left New Zealand after winning a maiden at Matamata. She was sent to John O’Shea which seemed logical given that he trained this filly’s father, Complacent for a time. There was plenty to like about her Aussie debut at Wyong over 1350m; it deadset had 1600m/big track best time written all over it. Sian is a locally trained gelding third-up off two improving runs. Seems to be wanting a mile now. Oakfield Cherokee is a full to Lucia Valentina and could/ should charge late here.

Bet: Comme Bella Fille to win, exacta 3 to beat 2

RACE 2

Sur La Mer, French for On The Sea, ran a close second to her potentially very handy stablemate Pretty Elsa at her first start at this same venue on April 10. Eighteen days later, this daughter of Nature Strip’s sire Nicconi, was a distant but worthy second in town. The one to beat with that grand alley. Lumerai has finished last in one of her two starts and last in both trials in preparation for this but to be fair, the trials actually weren’t that bad. Could be a surprise packet perhaps. Alighted should remain prominent.

Bet: Sur La Mer to win, Lumerai to place

RACE 3

Gerardjoseph was pretty solid in the betting at $21 when he made his debut in a 1200m maiden at Goulburn. In hindsight he was probably a hundred to one chance of beating Scream And Shout but at the end of the day, there was a bit to like about Gerardjoseph’s run from a future standpoint. The son of the Kentucky Derby winner Animal Kingdom is going to love the 1400m on the big track. Hard not to like Carartie. She has placed at her first two for John O’Shea and was only two and three-quarters off Gleneagles in the Clarendon 17-days ago. River Bobo trialled like he would run well.

Bet: Gerardjoseph to win, quinella 13,15

RACE 4

Leave Me Be is by Nature Strips’ sire Nicconi and is a granddaughter of Bob Haire’s Australia Day Cup winner All Angels. She’s only been with Chris Waller for the last two of her four career runs, winning on April 29 at Wyong. Can’t really vouch for the opposition but she did put them away pretty easily. General Soleil won his maiden like a good horse some time back. Granted he didn’t win last time, but he ran some good races. Trial was quite appealing. Global Queen is blessed with barrier 1. Cross Step in progressive.

Bet: Leave Me Be to win

RACE 5

Tri Nations was brave in the extreme when he resumed here on April 15. Keep in mind that he was first-up, he ended up being three wide and took off before the bend yet had the temerity to fight back on the line and run second. Recondite is an Irish-bred import in the Dynamic colours. The Richard and Michael Freedman trained gelding raced three times last preparation for a second then back-to-back wins at Kembla and Newcastle. Has the perfect draw. Ditto that for Astero, the draw that is. If the track was Heavy, he’d nearly be a good thing. Respect Savvy Legend from the Hall Of Fame stable.

Bet: Tri Nations to win

RACE 6

Wicklow is just about the most interesting horse on the whole card. He wears the colours of Richard Pegum and trained by Chris Waller. Bred in Ireland, this young and lightly-raced horse was good in his three runs in Britain but it’s his Australian trials that have stamped him as a horse who will pay back his fare and more from here on. Happy Song is straight off the Lonhro assembly line. She had trialled well before her creditable third on debut at 1400m – raced like she wanted a mile too. Kahuka did not go a yard on that wet track at Hawkesbury last start. The Carpet Bagger could be the value.

Bet: Wicklow to win, box trifecta 4,8,9,11

RACE 7

Leave Me Some has run some good races when she can settle off a fast speed and get into clear running. She drew 11 of 11 here last start and led but faded to finish well down the order behind Henschel who she has to find the best part of six lengths to turn the tables on from that meeting. It is possible if she gets the right sort of run here. That said, Allan Denham has got Henschel flying this time in. Ranges is a last start winner over this same track and distance. Resilient Star was beaten a long way by Midland last start but raced wide and it was won by the subsequent Scone Guineas winner.

Bet: Leave Me Some each-way or if scratched, Henschel to win
