Preview, Tips and Best Bets for Ipswich Monday 12th April

The abandoned Ipswich meeting of last Wednesday finally takes place on what should be a soft (5) surface. Ipswich is a tricky track at the best of times and with the rail out nine metres well drawn front runners will be advantaged.

Race 1 – 2YO Class 2 Handicap 800m

Barriers are all-important in these 800m flutters but with only five acceptors all should get their chance.

LE RUBIS (3) won over this trip three starts back and was then narrowly beaten by Illiciate Affairs in a similar race last start. With Jaden Lloyd riding he drops 3.5kg on his last outing and has the speed to overcome the outside gate.

Stuart Kendrick is debuting FIERCE WARRIOR (2) which is a brother to the short-course specialist Dark Son. His jumpout suggests he has inherited the family speed and with Kyle Wilson-Taylor claiming 1.5kg will be ready to go.

Barry Lockwood runners can never be ignored first-up and MISS DAURIAN (4) has had one trial over 650m at Deagon. She is bred for speed and can make a strong debut.

SHERWOOD PRINCE (1) has struggled since resuming but has speed and the inside gate over 800m will have him box seating throughout.

Betting strategy: LE RUBIS (3) has the revealed form but too many unknowns for me.

Race 2 – Three-Year-Old Maiden Handicap 800m

There are no stars in this and gates will play a major part.

RUBY EXPRESS (5) wasn’t beaten far at her debut at Gatton and won a recent trial at Beaudesert over 900m by a big space. She has speed and from gate two with Jag Guthmann-Chester is the one they will have to run down.

BAKHUHATSU (1) has been given plenty of trials by the Edmonds and should be ready for this. By Spirit Of Boom he is bred for speed and with Robbie Fradd should be prominent for a long way.

YES YUP YAY (9) was heavily supported in a similar race when resuming but found Pianist too good. She has been kept fresh since and Michael Cahill will give her every chance from gate five.

STREAKA (3) is resuming and drawn wide but at her most recent outing she was runner-up to Aventurine at the Gold Coast. That form is good enough for this and Michael Rodd helps.

Betting Strategy: Think RUBY EXPRESS (5) can get away with this. One unit to win.

Race 3 – 3YO Maiden Plate 1100m

The best chances in this are resuming or on debut so watch the market.

BIZ CLASS (5) has been freshened after a runner-up effort on debut at the Gold Coast over 900m. This distance should be more suitable and with Robbie Fradd she has the speed to be prominent.

Barry Lockwood produces another debutant in SEA PALLING (2) and has given Noel Callow the ride. He has had three trials, gets winkers and with a strong rider aboard should be ready to go.

MISSY MILE (7) is resuming and won a recent trial easily at the Gold Coast. She ran in strong races during her first preparation at the Gold Coast and wasn’t disgraced placing behind The Drinks Cart on one occasion. That form is good enough for this and with Wendy Peel’s 3kg claim is well placed.

Betting Strategy: Follow the money. Not for me.

Race 4 – 3YO Maiden Plate 1100m

READY TO CHASE (4) disappointed when he couldn’t chase down Cold Hard Fact when odds-on favourite at Gatton over this trip and Desleigh Forster is backing him up quickly. With blinkers back on and a stronger rider in Mark Du Plessis he gets all the favours and can make amends.

BLUINI (2) had support at his Sunshine Coast debut but the saddle slipped and he lost all chance. Liam Birchley has put Noel Callow on and from gate one improvement is expected.

SQUARE DANCE (5) is resuming for Stuart Kendrick. He has had his chances but placing at three of seven outings keeps him under notice and he can show up fresh in this moderate field.

SIENNA’S AWARD (10) dropped out at Doomben last start and a tongue-tie may help. He placed at two of his three previous starts, a firmer surface suits and he can improve.

Betting Strategy: None of these excite. No bet

Race 5 – Maiden Plate 1200m

The one with upside may be CRAYON (3) which had a wide run and looked the winner at Toowoomba but was outgunned late when resuming over 1110m. Trained by Michael Nolan the Sebring colt will strip fitter here, gets a tongue-tie and with Michael Rodd replacing Nozi Tomizawa can be in the finish.

PURE PURGATORY (8) resumes for Natalie McCall and whilst she has convictions, six placings from seven outings can’t be ignored. With Tiff Brooker to ride from gate two PURE PURGATORY (8) will get every chance in what looks to be a moderate field.

CHRYSLA (5) wasn’t beaten far at Grafton when resuming and has the speed to be prominent for a long way.

MORE THAN VENICE (9) is on debut for Chris Meagher. He has had two quiet trials and is a well-bred type that can show up for Jaden Lloyd.

Betting Strategy: Another race to avoid.

Race 6 – Class 3 Handicap 800m

They will go helter skelter but Natalie Mccall has found the right company for the resuming TRU BLU TANGO (2) which has had two trials and will be ready to fire. He has yet to be tried at this trip but has speed, goes well fresh and with Tiff Broker can control the race from an inside gate.

BLUE SEATTLE (2) has changed stables after some long injury breaks but is talented when right and won a recent trial at Toowoomba. She goes best fresh and with Baylee Nothdurft just needs to produce something like her old Saturday form to win this.

MOCKING (7) goes best at this track and has won over the trip previously. Now third-up she will be ready to do her best and if they go hard in front will be strongest late.

Betting strategy: Two units to win on TRU BLU TANGO (3)

Race 7 – Class 3 Handicap 1700m

With BADGE OF GAMENESS (7) in the field an even tempo is expected and that will suit the Daryl Hansen-trained FAST TRAIN (2) which has placed at his past three outings and won his only previous outing at this track and distance. From gate one with Bobby El-Issa he can box-seat and will be hard to beat.

ROUND OF APPLAUSE (8) copped some tightening and protested unsuccessfully when a beaten favourite at Beaudesert over 1650m. With Madeleine Wishart’s claim he is well placed and will be running on.

PRINCESS SPARKLES (6) is racing honestly since resuming and fought hard on a very heavy track at Gold Coast last start. She is better suited here and will get a good run with Michael Cahill.

WARSET (4) hasn’t flattered at his two runs this time in but gets up to his right trip here and can improve.

Betting Strategy: Three units on FAST TRAIN (2) to win

Race 8 – Class 1 Handicap 1200m

CHECKERS (1) has had four outings since coming from New Zealand to join the Stuart Kendrick stable. Whilst bred to stay his best efforts have been at 1200m and the trainer has kept him fresh since running fifth in a much stronger Class 3 Plate at Eagle Farm. With Tiff Brooker to ride from gate four he gets his chance to put a score on the board.

MASTER RED (4) wasn’t disgraced in a Saturday Three-Year-Old Handicap last start behind Toorooloo and made late ground. This extra distance will suit and with Michael Cahill he can be closing late.

INDUCEMENT (7) is resuming after a change of stables. Her trial was sound and she has the speed to be prominent from gate one.

DAD’S LAD (3) has been battling away solidly at Toowoomba and Mark Currie doesn’t bring them here unless he thinks they have a chance.

Betting Strategy: Two units to win on CHECKERS (1)

Race 9 – Benchmark 65 Handicap 1350m

None of these win out of turn but STAY SMART (5) battled into a placing in a Class 5 here last start and will find this easier. MIchael Hellyer stays on and if he can see out the 1350m is the one to beat in what is a weak race.

TO LOVE SOMEBODY (8) has been racing soundly on the Darling Downs and Michael Nolan has put Noel Callow up. From gate one he could go forward, set the tempo and be hard to pass.

LEGAL COUNSEL (2) is a nine-year-old and he doesn’t bob up often but he is an eight-time winner and has six placings from eleven starts here. He beat a Benchmark 68 field at Gold Coast last start, is well placed in a Benchmark 65 with 58kg and whilst winning two in a row may be a stretch he has found a weak race.

Betting strategy: Not for me.

BEST BET: FAST TRAIN (Race 7 No 2)
