Murwillumbah preview: Tips, best bets and inside mail

There is nothing like a winner to help lift the spirits and speed up a recovery and Gold Coast trainer John Wilson can get a real lift on Sunday with three strong chances at Murwillumbah.

While John is recovering from recent surgery, his son and fellow trainer Marcus will ably deputise for his father while having a runner of his own who also looks a chance.

“I’m taking dad’s horses down for him plus one of mine and they are all capable of figuring in the money somewhere,” Marcus Wilson said.

The best chance of Wilson Sr looks to be his final runner for the day in well-bred filly Tinipit, who tackles the Maiden Handicap over 1550m.

The daughter of top US-based stallion Tapit turned in a solid effort when runner-up at Toowoomba last start and from an ideal draw, can break through for her first win.

“It was a nice effort at Toowoomba the other day,” Wilson said.

“I know she got beat by seven lengths but she bumped into a smart one and she did beat the third horse by five lengths.

“She’s a nice filly with a lot of natural speed and has trained on well.

“She’s stepping up to 1550m for the time which is a little query.

“She does relax nicely and from a lovely gate, she should get an ideal run and Ben Looker will give her every chance.”

In the opening event, Alleluia is building towards his first win and is an each-way chance.

The More Than Ready gelding was a handy fourth here two starts back before a third at Casino last week.

“He then raced well at Casino on Beef Week Cup Day last week when he ran third,” Wilson said.

“It was a high tempo race and he got back a little bit on the inside but once he got into the clear, he hit the line well.

“He’s in the right sort of race and if he runs up to his last couple efforts, he will be a top three chance again.

The third of John’s trio is Day To Favour in the Class 1 and Maiden Plate of 2020m and she too looks a strong each-way chance.

“It’s taken her four or five runs to strike form but that’s her. She’s one of those typical old school stayers that needs to get miles into her legs,” he said.

“She’s drawn wide and will just need a bit of luck from the barrier but she’s definitely a good chance.”

Marcus Wilson’s own runner is Disarmed in the Benchmark 58 over 1100m.

He had excuses when he failed at Toowoomba last start and Wilson expects him to turn that form around.

“When he pulled up, his recovery was quite poor. We had him scoped and it looks like he may has displaced his palate during the run,” he said.

“I have changed a bit of gear and hopefully that will do the trick.

“His work has been pretty good of late and I’m expecting him bound back to form.”

RACE 1

Zephyr Cruiser drops back from provincial country grade and can break through for his first win. Finished close up when placed in his past two starts at Sunshine Coast. Wide draw is the only query. Daashur has placed at his past three including a third here two runs back. Alleluia has been fair of late and worth including in the exotics. Hot Profit has trialled well.

Bet: Zephyr Cruiser to win.

RACE 2

Meika Gold finished down the track on debut but is worth giving another chance. In that Gold Coast race, she blundered early and the saddle slipped. Togz battled away for fourth when resuming at Warwick. She had trialled nicely leading into that run and has drawn well here. Senshi Spirit showed enough last time in to suggest she can win a race. Snap The Luck was disappointing last star but previous two efforts were good.

Bet: Meika Gold each-way.

RACE 3

Clairvue Sun was a clear last on straightening but worked home okay to finish three lengths from the winner at Sunshine Coast over a mile last start. The jump in distance here looks suitable. Day To Favour was a handy second as Casino last week. Won’t be far away again. Grand Eagle has been good in placings his last two runs and will be in the finish again. Hudoo Vudoo and Jet Pilot have claims.

Bet: Box quinella/trifecta 2, 3, 7, 9, 12.

RACE 4

Tinipit was beaten by a pretty handy horse in Vampirina Diamond at Toowoomba last start but she did beat the third horse by five lengths. Up to 1550m for the first time but drawn perfectly and will give this a real shake. Our Flaming Moes was disappointing at Casino last week but has claims on placings at previous two starts. Mckeegan and Harryup are racing well enough to include in the multiples

Bet: Tinipit to win. Quinella 7, 12.

RACE 5

Brazen Force turned in a good effort last start when working home nicely for this to Bofors at Gold Coast two weeks ago. He’s got 61kg but drops in grade and drawn well. Pieropan is coming off a smart first-up win at Coffs Harbour. Jay Curve led by a big margin before just being caught by Valley of Dreams at Sunshine Coast last start. Electric Miss was just beaten at Casino last week and won’t be far away.

Bet: Brazen Force to win.

RACE 6

Disarmed ran a nice fourth at Ipswich two starts back but had a problem last start when he finished down the track at Toowoomba. With a gear change, expect to see him bounce back. Brinkmanship is first-up and won both recent trials very well. Defactor is resuming from a spell and has won a recent trial. Form last time in was solid. Sailing has placed at two of her three runs this time in before a short break.

Bet: Disarmed each-way. Quinella/trifecta 3, 4, 5, 10.

RACE 7

Married To The Mob ran below expectations here last start on a heavy track when fourth to Aceplay in a Bm66. Back in grade and a better surface, he will be hard to beat. Vaporetto has four of her last five starts and can figure in the placings again. Just pipped by One Shining Star at Coffs Harbour last start. Canexcell peaked on his run 100m when eighth at Moree last start and drop in distance suits. Spirit Of Vain is worth thought.

Bet: Married To the Mob to win.
