Mick Price considers Golden Eagle after turning to Google Earth for Our Playboy in Winx Guineas win
Mick Price is eyeing the super rich Golden Eagle with dominant Winx Guineas winner Our Playboy after the astute trainer turned to a left-field solution to work out how to handle the car park draw he was dealt at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
On the receiving end of barrier 17 of 17 (before scratchings), Price unconventionally opened Google Earth to hatch a plan for the race, which he laughs was quickly thrown out the window by jockey Robbie Fradd anyway after he settled last in running before making his way through the field to win by almost six lengths.
“I thought the mile suited but I was not 100 per cent sure, then he drew 17 out of 17 and I sat there when the field came out thinking ‘what do I do here?,” he said.
“I ended up getting Google Earth up, sat there looking at this Sunny Coast track scratching my head thinking about it.
“I rang (jockey) Jim Byrne – not that he was riding it, I respect his advice – and I said what do we do here?
“He said a couple of things, first one was you can’t be outside the leader from there and the other was you won’t want to be out the back because the fence sometimes doesn’t play well.

“I had that conversation with Robbie Fradd on Sunday morning, then I am watching the race thinking there must have been a problem with communication. As usual, he knew more and it worked.”
With Sunday’s victory coming in his first trip up to 1600m, Price said he couldn’t help but think of the $7.5 million Golden Eagle as an option with Our Playboy.
“It was his first try at 1600m and I thought it was comprehensive, he didn’t win by half a length, he was strong to the line and strong through the line so it opens a few options for him,” he said.
“One of them might even be the Golden Eagle, I know it was a soft seven and he’s a good wet tracker.
“It’s at the end of October and worth $7.5 million restricted to four-year-old’s. We have spoken about Ayrton running in the race but I think when you’re placing horses to be fair to owners you have to place them in the best possible way you can think of and I reckon it might be a nice option.”
While stablemate Ayrton is the $6 favourite for the race with TAB, Our Playboy is rated a $51 chance.
