Jockey Billy Egan’s whip record costs him a penalty surplus at Flemington

The poor record of jockey Billy Egan has contributed to his 13-meeting suspension for overuse of the whip at Flemington on Sunday.

Egan drove the Luke Oliver-trained Real Sensation home to a narrow win in the RAAF Centenary (1400m) but stewards took exception to the jockey’s use of the whip.

Stewards deemed Egan struck the mare seven times, two more than allowed, before the 100m and 16 times overall.

Egan would have received a seven-meeting suspension under normal circumstances but stewards gave the jockey an extra six meetings because of his poor record with whip rules.

Stewards also fined Egan $2000.

Egan was suspended six times for whip rule breaches last season.

His latest breach means Egan will miss next week’s Warrnambool carnival at which he would have had multiple winning chances via his partnership with the Patrick Payne stable.
