Irish jockeys’ title leader Paul Townend has foot injury assessed

Irish jump jockeys' championship leader Paul Townend has injured his foot and misses his Easter Monday rides.

The top sportsman was assessed in hospital after he fell from the Willie Mullins-trained Egality Mans in the Grade Two Colm Quinn BMW Novice Hurdle on Sunday.

Stablemate Power Of Pause, ridden by Bryan Cooper, was brought down in the incident three hurdles from the finish at Fairyhouse.

Townend, ten winners ahead of Rachael Blackmore in the 2020-21 title race, was ruled out of his subsequent rides at the track.

Danny Mullins will take over on leading BoyleSports Irish Grand National contender Agusta Gold.

An update from the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board's chief medical officer Dr Jennifer Pugh said: "Paul Townend is waiting on a further scan to assess a foot injury sustained at Fairyhouse this afternoon and he will not be riding at Fairyhouse tomorrow (Monday)."

Townend was taken to Blanchardstown Hospital for precautionary x-rays after the fall and he is having further tests.

Danny Mullins also partners Townend's scheduled mount Stormy Ireland in the Underwriting Exchange Hurdle, while Easy Game will be ridden by Brian Hayes in the Devenish Chase.
