Huge horse racing upset as odds-on favourite is beaten by 125/1 no-hoper

There were plenty of irritated horse racing punters – and one or two lucky ones – following a huge shock in the race meeting at Newbury on Friday.

For the Make Your Best Bet At BetVictor EBF Maiden Stakes, a 7f Maiden race, it was Leadman, ridden by David Probert, who went in as the resounding 4-9 favourite. And sure enough, the Andrew Balding trained horse made much of the early going, and was in contention in the closing stages.

However, with 100 yards to go, the leader was challenged by the un-fancied OJ Lifestyle. And sure enough, it was the 125-1 outshot who took a remarkable win by a nose, with the leading pair some five lengths clear of third-placed Bussento.

It meant delight for jockey Tom Queally and trainer Gary Moore. And the shock outcome was aptly summed up on Twitter by PA Racing correspondent Simon Milham.

"A 125-1 Newbury winner!" he wrote. "OJ Lifestyle overturned 4-9 favourite Leadman in the 7f maiden. Tom Queally did the steering as the GL Moore Gleneagles colt scored by nose, showing guts aplenty. The pair were five lengths clear of the rest, too!"

Whilst the result would have had the bookies silently sniggering, it would have made the day of some lucky punters too. @kris1179 responded to Milham's post by saying "What a pick," alongside some beer glass emoji's.

There was no such shock in the main race of the weekend, the BetVictor Hungerford Stakes on Saturday. At 9-1, it was Jumby, ridden by William Buick, who pulled clear in the final furlong.

And the afternoon got better for trainer Eve Johnson Howard when that triumph was followed up by a win for Suzy's Shoes. The 5-2 favourite came home in the Mettal UK British EBF Restricted Maiden Stakes.

But it was OJ Lifestyle who undoubtedly provided the weekend's most stunning result. Owned by Omar Jackson, the two-year-old bay colt was starting just its second race in 2022.
