Follow the latest news on how Victoria’s latest Covid-19 outbreak will affect Caulfield meeting on Saturday

Jockey segregation is not part of Racing Victoria’s response to the imminent Melbourne lockdown.

The regulator adopted the tactic last year, during the guts of the pandemic, splitting jockeys into “green” and “yellow” teams to protect the entire cohort from potential exposure to COVID-19.

Both RV and Melbourne Racing Club remain hopeful of Caulfield being able to host a crowd-free meeting on Saturday after Victorian Acting Premier James Merlino announced a seven-day lockdown for the state.

Merlino confirmed approved professional sporting events can go ahead without crowds.

It is expected the racing “bubble” will be reintroduced, with access to mounting yards, horse stalls and stables restricted to trainers, jockeys, stewards and essential race day operations staff.

MRC advised earlier in the owners would not be able to enter the mounting yard on Saturday.

Access had been strictly limited already, with a limit of four owners per runner in place previously.

It comes as two Victorian jockeys on Wednesday stood down voluntarily from all race rides and track work pending Covid tests.

A close contact of at least one of the jockeys attended an updated Covid exposure site.

RV would not be drawn on the matter.
