Away team says filly is at top of her Game for repeat effort in Magic Millions 3YO Guineas
CONFIDENCE is growing in the camp of budding history maker Away Game as she prepares for the return bout with Isotope and a new challenger in Forbidden Love ahead of Saturday’s Magic Millions Guineas.
The stage is set for an epic Guineas after all three top fancies drew ideally.
Away Game is trying to improve on the feats of Exhilarates and Driefontein, who both won the 2YO Classic before placing in the Guineas the following year while Sweet Idea was second in the 2YO Classic before winning the Guineas as a three-year-old.
The Ciaron Maher and David Eustace trained Away Game rounded out her preparation on the Gold Coast course proper on Tuesday, sitting off stablemate Amish Boy before picking him up in the straight. A couple of hours later her chances grew further after picking up barrier three.
Eustace watched the stable’s big Magic Millions contingent go through their paces and liked what he saw from last year’s 2YO Classic winner.
“I don’t think we could have her any better,” Eustace said.
“She missed the spring which is probably working in our favour now.
“She had a good strong bit (of work) between races on Saturday, so it was just a bit of tick over work with Amish Boy, who is a fit horse as well.
“We couldn’t have her any better. She’s flying.”
Eustace said Away Game will make use of her barrier and be prominent in the run, which he feels will be her best chance to see out the 1400m.
“If she can go forward, relax and get in a nice rhythm, I think that’s how she will get it,” he said.
“We don’t need to change our style and try and ride her to hit the line. You just trust that she will stay, especially around this track.”
Jockey Glen Boss said Away Game had benefited from her first up run and noted she’s a filly that continues to improve the further she gets into a campaign.
“People are guessing 1400m and second up, but what you see is what you get. She’s a real winner,” he said.
“Every step of the 1400m, she’s going to look the winner.
“I wouldn’t swap her for any other runner in the race.
“Everything she does in 110 per cent. She refuses to get beaten in a gallop. You can’t instil this in horses, it’s a competitive spirit and she’s got it in spades,” Boss said.
“She’s one of those horses that I love being on the back of because you know what you’ve got all the time and she never lets you down.”
Isotope, who drew gate seven, held her place at the top of betting, marked at $2.70 with Away Game firming to $4. Group 1 placed filly Forbidden Love trimmed up to $5.50 after drawing alongside Away Game in four.
