The US Open enters the final round today with a host of the world’s best golfers in close proximity at the top of the leaderboard.
Rory McIlroy is up there with a group of players in contention to win the US Open in what looks set to be a fascinating final round at Torrey Pines. Englishman Richard Bland headed into Saturday sharing the lead with Russell Henley at five-under par.
But Bland dropped away ahead of the final round, with McIlroy two behind joint-leaders Louis Oosthuizen, Henley and Mackenzie Hughes.
McIlroy, the 2011 US Open champion, carded a four-under 67 yesterday and is tied with defending champion Bryson DeChambeau.
‘Moving Day’ in the third round was always going to be an opportunity for some of the world’s best players to make a charge up the leaderboard.
And the feuding duo of Brooks Koepka and DeChambeau were going along nicely with Justin Thomas also moving up.
Torrey Pines last hosted the US Open back in 2008 when Tiger Woods won his fourth major championship.
The course wasn’t as high scoring as it has been this week though with Woods and Rocco Mediate the only players to finish under par.
DeChambeau came into the week as the defending champion after winning the 2020 edition by an impressive six strokes.
The charismatic 27-year-old, nicknamed ‘The Scientist’ for his methodical approach to the game, will enter the final round with a chance of defending his title.

And speaking earlier this week, DeChambeau admitted he was excited about the prospect of winning his second major.
“I try to be as aggressive as possible,” he said. “I feel like it’s a little bit similar to Winged Foot, albeit the grass and the rough is a little thicker.
“For the most part, I’m going to be trying to bomb it as much as possible and try to gouge it out when I don’t hit it in the fairway.
“If I have over 190mph ball speed, it’s going to be tremendous out here covering bunkers and whatnot. But again, sometimes the bunkers are good to be in out here.
“They’re in really great condition, and the rough lies can be treacherous sometimes. It really depends what type of lie you get.
“I really don’t know if bunkers or rough is better, but for sure just getting it as close as I can to the green is going to be a strategy of mine.
“I’m blessed to have won this championship, and I think that from my perspective, touring it around a little bit, taking it to fun places and having some fun with it was great.
“I was nice enough to bring it back in good shape, no dinks, no dents, so that’s what I was proud about. Hopefully, I can take it back again this week.”
