Tiger Woods has opened up on how his son, Charlie, and daughter Sam have motivated him on his road to recovery.
Woods was involved in a brutal car accident in February 2021 that shattered his right leg and he now has plantar fasciitis in his right foot. He is meant to be resting at present, but put those plans on pause to play in the PNC Championship with Charlie this weekend.
Speaking after the first round, where they are two shots off the lead held by Justin and Mike Thomas, Woods Snr was asked about how his children – Charlie is 13 and Sam is 15 – have helped him.
‘Each and every day,’ Woods said. ‘Just to be able to see their faces and see their smiles and to hear their words of encouragement.

‘I’ve had some tough days, as he’s known, but just to have their support and their love — you know, I’m not going to get teary-eyed here — but it has meant so much to me to be able to get to this point in life. And forget the stage that we’re playing on, but just to get to this point in life.’
Charlie, meanwhile, found another reason to respect his 15-time Major winning dad as the teenager played on Saturday with left ankle pain.
As well as battling the heel condition he currently has, Woods infamously won the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines with an injured ACL and two stress fractures on his leg.
‘I found a new respect for him now after getting a very minor injury – I wouldn’t even call it an injury, I’m just hurt,’ Charlie said.
‘Just to see what he’s going through and how, with a fraction of it, it hurts and it’s just cool how he has gotten to where he is now and what he has been through.’

Tiger then added a line of wisdom of his own.
‘There’s a big difference between pain and injury. This is just pain. If you’re injured, you’re not playing,’ Woods said.
‘This is just a little bit of pain and it’s game time. We go out there and suck it up together. We’re prefect yin and yang – he’s got a left foot, I’ve got a right foot, we’ve got two good feet. We’re good.’
The second and final round of the PNC Championship in Florida gets underway later on Sunday.
