The Tee Room: Matt Wallace's patience snaps with almighty F-bomb

THE TEE ROOM: Matt Wallace’s patience snaps with almighty F-bomb, legend Vijay Singh endures a nightmare second round and Robert MacIntyre is shaping up to be the flying Scotsman

  • Matt Wallace is calmer than he once was but dropped an F-bomb on the 16th
  • Vijay Singh reflected painfully on past glories during his horror second round
  • Robert MacIntyre is rapidly shaping up into a player with world-class potential

With the second round almost behind us at the 2021 Masters, there was plenty you may have missed from Friday’s action.

There were displays of snapped patience, a very rough ride for a veteran, and a brand new flying Scotsman on the cards.

The second round of the 2021 Masters is over and there was plenty more action in Augusta

So much for Wallace’s patience!

Rehabilitation – it’s a relative term. So over to Matt Wallace, one of the stars of the European Tour’s recent Angry Golfers sketch.

He’s a marginally calmer player than he once was but the Englishman dropped an almighty F-bomb on the par-three 16th, when his tee shot pitched to 10ft but then started to roll.

By the time it was done, he was 45ft away. ‘Newfound patience,’ quipped the commentator. Well, quite.

Clever thinking from Zalatoris

After a first-round 70 in his Masters debut, Will Zalatoris said: ‘If I’m stupid enough to think I can play here, then I’m stupid enough to think I can win it.’

After a 68 on Friday, the 24-year-old rookie is six under for the tournament – just one behind Justin Rose. Stupid has never looked so smart.

Rough ride for Singh

There must be a kinder way for legends to reflect on former glories.

At 58, Vijay Singh, the champion 21 years ago, started his second round on seven over and closed a further eight further from par.

Only Hudson Swafford, who followed a 73 with a 10-over 83, had a rougher day.

Bob can be flying Scotsman…

Four majors played, four cuts made for Robert MacIntyre.

The Scot, who was sixth at The Open in 2019, is only 24 but is rapidly shaping into a player with world-class potential.

After surviving the sand at the last in a second-round 70, he is handily-placed on level par.

Ollie’s win treble

Jose Maria Olazabal felt like he had won a third green jacket after adding a 71 to his opening 75 for a halfway total of two over par.

‘It’s like winning the event,’ said Olazabal, who did exactly that in 1994 and 1999.
