Tiger Woods will headline the seventh edition of The Match on Saturday, with substantial money to be earned at the Pelican Golf Club in Belleair, Florida. However, the competition’s ‘prize’ will take on a different spin as four of golf’s elite go head to head.

The 15-time major champion will team up with Rory McIlroy in a 12-hole, best-ball contest as they look to beat former Ryder Cup team-mates Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The action is set to kick off at midnight GMT and will be available to watch on Eurosport 2 (or live-streamed via the Eurosport Player).

Phil Mickelson beat Woods to take home a $9million prize pot when The Match was first played in 2018. However, the contest has taken on a more charitable trend in recent years, and Saturday’s showdown has the potential to do more good than ever.

That’s after it was confirmed all proceeds from the four-man face-off will go towards various charities chosen by the players. One of those good causes is the Hurricane Ian relief effort, aimed at helping those who were most affected by the Category 4 hurricane that ripped through the state of Florida in late September and early October.

While it can’t be known how much money will be donated to the relief effort prior to the event, the contribution is expected to be substantial. A previous edition of The Match managed to raise $20million for Covid-19 relief.

The players themselves will also play a critical role in deciding the figure that will ultimately be written on any bumper-size cheques. Those participating have in the past been able to trigger bonus donations of up to $350,000 if they manage to hit the ball in certain target areas across the course, as was seen in the last edition of The Match back in June.

It was there that legendary NFL quarterbacks Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers teamed up to defeat emerging stars Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen. One would hope a quartet of current golf professionals will stand a much greater chance of contributing cash donations through their shots.

McIlroy is currently ranked No. 1 in the world and will be hopeful of coming out on the winning side in his Match debut. Woods has complained of his restricted mobility in getting around the greens since injuring his leg in a life-threatening car crash last year, but his odds of reaching his best will be boosted given players will have their own buggies.
