Sky Sports forced to apologise for Rory McIlroy as golfer vents anger at Open

Sky Sports were forced to apologise in the latter stages of the final round of The Open when Rory McIlroy was caught loudly swearing after a mishit shot on the 16th hole. Torrential rain hit Hoylake with the chasing pack to Brian Harman struggling to find scoring opportunites.

McIlroy kept himself in the mix throughout the day, but missed several birdie opportunities to put more pressure on Harman. The Northern Irishman needed to make something happen in the final few holes and there was a glint in his eye on the 16th after smashing a huge drive down the fairway to leave just 174 to the pin.

A simple seven iron for McIlroy to try and hit the pin at the back of the green, but he was guilty of pulling his shot slightly to the left, which rolled down the hill and off the green for an awkward putt.

McIlroy couldn’t hide his frustrations at seeing his ball roll off the green, shouting “f***!” Sky Sports was showing McIlroy’s shot live on air at the time and had to apologise for McIlroy’s language.
