Padraig Harrington’s European Ryder Cup team is in Wisconsin to take on Team USA, as the visitors prepare to compete at Whistling Straits following victory at Le Golf National three years ago.

Team Europe know they will have to perform at their very best if they are to make it back-to-back Ryder Cup titles, as they take on an extremely strong American team that includes nine of the world’s top 11 players within their 12-man squad.

Adding to this, Harrington’s team is playing away from home on a course that has been set up to suit the long-hitting American team, the visiting side are no doubt the underdogs heading into this year’s event.

Despite this, one thing Europe do have on their side is a wealth of experience, compared to their American rivals. Sergio Garcia heads into the tournament as Europe’s all-time leading points scorer, while European stalwart Ian Poulter also secured a spot on the team on the back of his remarkable reputation from the match play competition.

Golf POLL: Will Europe or USA win Ryder Cup? Which player will star?

Further depth is added by Englishman Lee Westwood, who will make his 11th Ryder Cup appearance, a joint record in the blue and gold of Europe. Add to this the world No 1 Jon Rahm, and a whole host of golf’s freshest talents, the away team’s chances are far from slim in Wisconsin this year.

Friday’s opening foursomes sessions sees John Rahm and Sergio Garcia take on Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, Viktor Hovland and Paul Casey against Dustin Johnson and Collin Morikawa, Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick versus Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger and finally Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy against Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
