Day two of the Open gets underway with Louis Oosthuizen the leader
Day two of the Open gets underway with Louis Oosthuizen the leader after impressive first round score of 64… but will Jordan Spieth overtake him today and can the likes of Bryson DeChambeau, Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka get back in contention?
- The second day of the 149th Open Championship got underway on Friday
- South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen began the day as the clubhouse leader
- American duo Jordan Spieth and Brian Harman are one stroke behind the leader
- The likes of Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka had slow starts on day one
The second day of the 149th Open Championship got underway on Friday with Louis Oosthuizen beginning the day as the leader.
The South African hit an impressive 64 at Royal St George’s on Thursday to hold a one-stroke lead over American duo Jordan Spieth and Brian Harman.
A cloudier but still bright day of golf awaits in Sandwich, Kent for the 32,000 spectators who are allowed to attend the Open.

South Africa’s Louis Oosthuizen is the clubhouse leader after an impressive 64 on round one
Already underway on Friday are the likes of Padraig Harrington, Jason Day and England’s Paul Waring on a slightly overcast morning in Kent.
Leader Oosthuizen will tee off just before 3pm BST alongside Shane Lowry and pre-tournament favourite John Rahm, with Spieth and Harman resuming their bids half an hour before.
Both Oosthuizen and Spieth have put themselves in excellent opening positions to replicate their respective 2010 and 2017 Open victories.
Jordan Spieth also dazzled the Open crowd once again and is one shot behind Oosthuizen

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau, who was playing alongside Spieth, struggled to overpower the course and ended Thursday’s opening round one over par.
The American was a frustrated figure on day one of the Open and criticised his own club supplier Cobra after Thursday’s play.
He said: ‘The driver sucks. It’s not a good face for me and we’re still trying to figure out how to make good on the mishits. I’m living on the razor’s edge.
‘It’s a golf course that’s pretty short, so when I hit the driver and it doesn’t go on the fairway, if it’s not in the first cut, it’s in the hay. It’s tough for me to get it on to the green and control that.’
Cobra responded by calling DeChambeau’s comments ‘stupid’ and claiming ‘it’s very rare where he’s happy’.
His rival Brooks Koepka, whose long-running feud with DeChambeau dominated the pre-tournament coverage, finished yesterday’s play two shots ahead after producing a round of 69.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy hit a birdie on the eighteenth to end his first round on par. The Northern Irishman will continue his round at 10.20am BST
The best British players from Thursday’s play were English golfers Tommy Fleetwood, Andy Sullivan, Danny Willett and Justin Rose – all on three under par – while countryman Paul Casey is one shot behind.
