Australia opener David Warner triggered many cricket fans online this afternoon as he poked some fun at himself for his poor recent record against England seamer Stuart Broad.

Broad is in Joe Root’s side taking on New Zealand in the first Test of the summer at Lord’s this week, and has actually been promoted to vice-captain.

And as Warner watched the England seamer bowl to Ross Taylor at the Home of Cricket, the Australian joked: ‘Trying to get some sleep her in Aus (sic) but this bloke pops up on my tv screen!!

David Warner poked some fun at himself for his poor recent record against Stuart Broad

The England seamer dismissed Warner seven out of 10 times during the 2019 Ashes series

‘Few months to get some sleep before the Ashes down under’, accompanied with two laughter-crying emojis.

Broad had Warner’s number in the last Ashes series, dismissing his opponent seven times out of a possible 10.

Yet Warner had the last laugh, as Australia retained the Ashes following a 2-2 series draw two years ago.

The pair are likely to come up against each other once again when the Ashes down under gets underway this winter.

Speaking last year about how he was so successful against one of Test cricket’s most consistent opening batsman, Broad said: ‘Having played against him a lot over the last eight or nine years, I found as a taller bowler, when he sits back in the crease he’s always cut or square-driven me a lot and hit me to the boundary.

Broad is likely to come up against Warner again during the Ashes which starts this winter

‘I did quite a lot of research going into that Ashes series of how I could get him out because my record against him was really average.

‘I just decided I was going to try and hit the stumps every ball, that was my mindset. I’m not going to try and swing it away from him, because I think that gave him a bit of width.

‘I’m just going to try and scramble the seam and if he hits it straight back past me for four, I’m happy. I probably ended up bowling a bit fuller than I’d planned to, but it worked.’
