TOP SPIN: Curran has best England haul of 13 wickets at T20 World Cup

TOP SPIN: Sam Curran’s haul of 13 wickets was the most by an England bowler at a T20 World Cup… while fast scoring Alex Hales eclipsed opening partner Jos Buttler

  • Curran beat previous best of 10 wickets by Willey, Sidebottom and Swann
  • England became second team to win the trophy twice — after the West Indies
  • England had never won a T20 match at Melbourne before Sunday’s final triumph

Sam Curran’s tournament haul of 13 wickets was the most by an England bowler at any T20 World Cup, beating 10 by David Willey in 2016, and by Ryan Sidebottom — another left-armer — and Graeme Swann when England last won the trophy, in 2010.

England became only the second team to win the trophy twice — after West Indies in 2012 and 2016.

Only one player in the World Cup hit more sixes than the 10 of Alex Hales. Zimbabwe’s Sikandar Raza managed 11, but from two innings more.

Seven of Hales’ sixes came against India.

The team’s quickest scorer was Alex Hales, an outcast during the Eoin Morgan years. His strike-rate of 147 per 100 balls pipped his opening partner Jos Buttler’s 144.

The unbroken stand of 170 between Alex Hales and Jos Buttler in the semi-final against India at Adelaide was the highest in the tournament.

England had never won a T20 match at Melbourne before.

Five previous matches had brought four defeats and a washout in this tournament against Australia.
