Nasser Hussain names two reasons Justin Langer would be ‘very good’ for England

Nasser Hussain believes former Australia coach Justin Langer is a strong contender to replace Chris Silverwood as England 's new head coach.

Silverwood was axed last week by the ECB following England's 4-0 humiliation at the hands of Langer's Australia in the Ashes.

Managing director Ashley Giles and assistant coach Graham Thorpe have also left their positions in the wake of the Ashes.

Langer, meanwhile, resigned as Australia coach on Saturday, rejecting a short-term extension and citing a lack of support from senior players, support staff and the board as the reasons behind his decision.

There has been speculation that Langer could cross the Ashes divide and become England's new coach, with interim managing director Sir Andrew Strauss refusing to rule out the possibility.

"I know him well," Strauss said. "On the surface, he's done a very good job of things with the Australian cricket team. So I wouldn't rule him out, but I'm sure there are plenty of others as well."

Hussain, meanwhile, believes Langer would be a "good candidate" to replace Silverwood, describing him as "the type of character England need at the moment".

Speaking to Sky Sports , Hussain said: "Langer would be very good for two reasons.

"He has just played against England, so knows exactly where their strengths and weakness lie, as he's literally been there and seen it.

"He's also the type of character England need at the moment. They do need that micro-management and they do need that kick up the backside.

"There are not performing, and they've got to get results going, so Langer would be a good candidate."

Michael Vaughan also believes Langer would be an excellent appointment, writing in the Telegraph : "I do not see any one else better suited than Langer to crack heads together and bring some tough management to a group of England players who have become too cosy recently.

"If you want one person to come in with a huge point to prove then it is Langer. He is an Ashes winner, T20 World Cup winner and knows everything about playing in Australia. Just go and get him."
