Injury wrap: Stay up to date with the latest injury news from the AFLW

Three AFLW clubs have announced serious injuries to players in two days, as the 2021 season rapidly approaches.

On Monday, Gold Coast announced midfielder Jacqui Yorston, 20, had ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament at training and would miss the 2021 season.

On Tuesday, North Melbourne revealed forward Elisha King would be sidelined for the entire season with a hamstring injury, while Fremantle said ruck Aine Tighe would likely be out for the season after an arthroscopy revealed a significant medial meniscal tear in her left knee.

The AFLW season starts when Carlton takes on Collingwood on January 28.

Gold Coast’s AFLW head physio Aaron Duffy said Yorston would consult a specialist before deciding on the best course of action for her knee reconstruction.

“It’s incredibly unfortunate for Jacqui to have ruptured her ACL this close to the AFLW season starting,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kangaroos’ AFLW footy boss, Nathan Hrovat, said it was disappointing King, 21, would miss the season, given she already missed part of the 2020 season with a knee injury, and managed only four games.

“This is obviously incredibly disappointing news for Elisha and the club, but we will support her fully throughout her recovery,” he said.

“She’s a very resilient person and we are confident she will bounce back from this injury.”

Fremantle’s general manager of football Joe Brierty said Tighe’s injury was in the same knee in which she tore her ACL last year in a pre-season game, keeping her out of the 2020 season.

“We are devastated for Aine after the ACL injury she sustained last year,” Brierty said of the Irish recruit.

“Everyone was excited about what Aine would have contributed to our 2021 campaign.

“Aine is very resilient and dedicated, which was evident last year when she remained in Australia post-season to use the club’s facilities to ensure she completed the best possible ACL rehabilitation.

“Unfortunately for Aine and the club, the timing of the injury means it is unlikely that we’ll see her play in 2021.

“The club will continue to support Aine through her rehabilitation and we know that she will do everything to recover as quickly as possible”.
