Cricket fans have hailed Mark Wood after a brilliant bowling showing on the first day of the third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Wood, 33, was recalled to the side along with fellow seamer Chris Woakes and spinner Moeen Ali after not being fully fit for the first two Tests, which Australia won to put them 2-0 up in the series.

But in Leeds, the fast bowler sent down the quickest over ever bowled at Headingley – touching 97miles per hour – to rip through the visitors with a superb five-for.

He bowled opener Usman Khawaja before ripping through the tail, dismissing villain Alex Carey, Mitchell Starc, captain Pat Cummins and Todd Murphy before holding the ball up to the joyous home crowd.

And supporters quickly took to social media to label him England’s ‘saviour’ after his ‘unreal’ performance with the ball.
