England told they need to "get nasty" in bid to save Ashes series by Vaughan
Michael Vaughan has urged England to "get nasty" and "ruffle a few feathers" as they attempt to mount a fightback in the Ashes.
England are currently 2-0 down in the series after suffering a pair of one-sided defeats to Australia in Brisbane and Adelaide.
England have suffered three batting collapses in four innings and allowed Australia to rack up more than 400 runs in their first innings in both Tests.
Vaughan, who famously captained England to an Ashes win in 2005 and also top scored in the 2002-03 series down under, believes the current side are simply "too nice".
Speaking on Fox Cricket's Follow-On podcast, he said: "It’s too nice. I see on the morning of the game they are all talking to Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon.
"I never had a conversation with Steve Waugh back in the day. I wouldn’t have dared go and speak to Glenn McGrath on the morning of the game or Shane Warne. You just didn’t.
"It’s all a bit friendly. I’d get nasty with them … They somehow need to find that on day one. Get into the scrap. Chirp, do whatever, just get into the scrap."
Vaughan also claimed England need to "get nasty with each other", adding: "That’s the one thing I’d say about this England management team: They are a good set of people.
"That includes players and the support staff. [But] are there enough that would stick their hands up and have a few bullets thrown at a few of the players in that heated dressing room moment?
"Is it all very nice and controlled? I always believe that in teams you need the odd character that might ruffle a few feathers. I’m not sure England have got the feather ruffler.
"They are at that stage now where they have to change something. It might be that they all get nasty, get nasty with each other. They all fall out.
"Who cares, but then come out and show a bit of spirit … I actually want to see a bit of mongrel in the England side."
