Cricket fans have had their say on Chris Silverwood’s sacking as England coach, following a disastrous Ashes series and a dreadful year of red-ball action.

Silverwood paid the ultimate price earlier today as part of the ECB cull, led by former captain Andrew Strauss, and he departed soon after managing director Ashley Giles.

The latest exit has unsurprisingly stirred a reaction on social media, with plenty of fanatics of the sport voicing their delight with the latest bombshell firing.

‘He had to go,’ one Twitter account said. ‘A very poor appointment in the first place.’

Another wrote: ‘Can’t argue with that, the correct decision. We need a BIG change.’

‘We had a coach?’ a third posted, shocked at the dismal performances from the side.

A fourth said ‘surprised he lasted this long’, accompanied by a shocked emoji.

Meanwhile, another jubilant follower of England opted for a short clip of celebrations from the US TV show The Office, and captioned the post with ‘YESSSSSSSSSS’.

In an ECB statement confirming his exit, Silverwood admitted that the last couple of years of his stewardship were testing, but insists he will take away good memories.

He said: ‘The last two years have been very demanding but I have really enjoyed my time with the team and I am very proud of the group considering the challenges we faced.

‘I leave with fond memories and I am looking forward to spending some time with my family before embracing the next challenge.’

Strauss, now the interim managing director, will imminently appoint a caretaker coach, with the three-Test tour of the Caribbean starting in just three weeks’ time.

England lost nine of their 15 red-ball cricket Tests across 2021, including series losses away to India and on home soil against New Zealand.
