'Egg on my face' – Vaughan reacts as India vs Australia prediction backfires

Former England captain Michael Vaughan passed on his congratulations to India for pulling off ‘one of the greatest if not the greatest Test victory of all time’ over Australia and admitted he had ‘egg on his face’ after predicting a comprehensive 4-0 defeat for the tourists at the start of the series.

India were without Virat Kohli and five of their main bowlers for the fourth and decisive Test and were up against it on the final day after being set an imposing target of 328 but Shubman Gill made 91 and an inspired Rishabh Pant scored an unbeaten 89 to get them over the line in Brisbane.

It’s the first time Australia have lost at the Gabba since as far back as 1988 and India’s win is already being described as one of the greatest from a touring side Down Under, with the stunning run chase the highest ever recorded at the iconic ground.

‘Wow .. That has to go down as one of the greatest if not the greatest Test victory of all time !!’ Vaughan tweeted shortly after India’s 2-1 series win to successfully retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.

‘Egg on my face over here in the UK .. but I love to see character & skill .. India have it in abundance .. btw Shubman Gill & Rishabh Pant are future superstars !’

India’s captain and, for so long, their talisman, Kohli, only featured in the first Test before leaving Australia to be present for the birth of his first child.

‘WHAT A WIN!!! Yessssss,’ an ecstatic Kohli tweeted after his team-mates sealed victory.

‘To everyone who doubted us after Adelaide, stand up and take notice. Exemplary performance but the grit and determination was the standout for us the whole way.

‘Well done to all the boys and the management. Enjoy this historic feat lads. Cheers.’
