Australia’s Khawaja dragged away by Ashes security as furious row erupts

Australia’s top-order batter had to be pulled away by security after getting into a heated exchange with a spectator in the long room at Queen’s. As Australia exited the field of the play through the main chamber of the library for lunch, Khawaja was stopped in his tracks by an outcry from one of the members.

As the back and forth intensified, security were forced to step in and pull Khawaja away to prevent the situation from escalating further. But the Aussie wouldn’t leave immediately and continued to exchange words with the spectator near the doorway.

Sky Sports presenter Ian Ward watched on in disbelief as he exclaimed: “Blimey! What a morning we have had here at Lord’s, I have never seen anything like it at the home of cricket.

“The crowd were right into the Australians on the field, that continued as the players went through the long room. Usman Khawaja was in a discussion, shall we say, with one of the members of the long room, he was pulled a way by a teammate and a steward. David Warner, the same thing happened to him.”

Ward then turned to former England captain in limited overs cricket Eoin Morgan and asked whether he had ever seen scenes quite like it during his 20 years playing at Queen’s.

Morgan replied: “No, I arrived here as a 16-year-old kid and I’m lucky to have played whole career here and I’ve never seen scenes like that, particularly in the long room let alone all around the ground.

“There is a huge sense of frustration but I cannot understand why. It’s complete naivety around what has happened with Jonny Bairstow’s dismissal.”

The commotion at Queen’s started when Jonny Bairstow was controversially stumped by Alex Carey as the ball was still deemed to be in play whilst the batsman walked out of his crease. Boos rang out around the ground as the crowd vented their frustrations at the decision and continued to jeer the Australians for the remainder of play.

Although we don’t know exactly what was said during the long room row it is likely to do with this moment.
