Ash Gardner out of World Cup opener with COVID-19

Explosive all-rounder Ash Gardner is out of at least Australia’s opening three World Cup matches after testing positive for COVID-19 in New Zealand.

Australia’s opening cup game is against England in Hamilton on Saturday, followed by matches against Pakistan in Mount Maunganui on March 8 and hosts New Zealand on March 13 at Wellington’s Basin Reserve.

Gardner’s power with the bat has only risen in importance to the Australian set-up after Meg Lanning’s team were thumped by New Zealand in a warm-up game that underlined how the tournament will be approached by rival teams.

“Australia all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has tested positive to COVID-19 following a routine RAT, with her positive result confirmed by a PCR test,” CA said in a statement.

“Gardner will remain in Christchurch and in line with ICC and New Zealand government health guidelines will continue isolating for 10 days. She is being supported in Christchurch by head of performance – women’s cricket, Shawn Flegler.

“All remaining Australian players and support staff have tested negative following subsequent RATs, and will proceed with existing plans to travel to Hamilton this evening ahead of the side’s opening match of the ICC women’s cricket World Cup against England on Saturday.”
