AFL great slams Cats and Bulldogs players for jersey ‘no-no’

A small detail in the blockbuster Round 14 clash between Geelong and the Western Bulldogs has delighted fans, but irked an AFL great.

The weather at GMHBA stadium in Geelong was brisk, and a huge number of players decided to sport long sleeve jumpers in the 12C conditions.

Several players from both teams were spotted wearing the long sleeves, including the Dogs’ Aaron Naughton and Josh Bruce and the Cats’ Luke Dahlhaus, Sam Menegola, Cam Guthrie, Zach Tuohy and Brad Close.

Fans and former players were in raptures at the sight of so many players opting to wear the rarely-worn long sleeves.

“@westernbulldogs hey I really like Aaron Naughton and long sleeves btw,” former Carlton and GWS player Dylan Buckley tweeted.

“Menegola in the long sleeve – much love,” West Coast Eagles premiership player Will Schofield posted, along with three heart eyes emojis.

Bulldogs key forwards Naughton and Bruce were particularly popular among viewers in a throwback to yesteryear.

"The long sleeve, the man-bun, the moustache. I don't know if anyone has had that combination before"

key forwards in long sleeves is pretty rare in general…? x2 in the same team/same game is combo is write your own number type stuff #AFLCatsDogs

That Josh Bruce long sleeve might be the most beautiful thing I've ever seen #AFLCatsDogs

Two key forwards in sleeves. How good.

Geelong small forward Luke Dahlhaus was sporting a very unique look.

“The two-jumper set-up there, Luke Dahlhaus. Sleeveless over the top of the long sleeve. That’s a cold, cold man!” commentator James Brayshaw noted on Channel 7.

But not everyone was impressed at the Dogs and Cats players setting what must be close to a record for the most long sleeve jumpers worn in the same game in recent memory.

“It was a no-no at Hawthorn, they weren’t even ordered,” four-time premiership player Jordan Lewis said in commentary on AFL Nation.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson is known for his dislike for long sleeve jerseys, famously refusing to allow his players to wear them.

The first-half was a tightly fought affair between the teams placed second and third on the AFL ladder.

Geelong was dealt a blow just minutes into the first quarter when gun midfielder Mitch Duncan was ruled out of the game with a knee injury.

Cats recruit Shaun Higgins replaced him as the medical substitute.

Unfortunately for Naughton, his night was ended early when he sustained a rib injury on the stroke of half-time in a heavy collision with Geelong’s Jed Bews.

Bulldogs veteran Mitch Wallis was activated as the medical sub.
